Kingscliff Renovation
The residence, constructed in the 1990s, is ideally situated on a steeply graded lot in Kingscliff, offering expansive ocean views and convenient proximity to the town center. The original architectural layout comprised several rooms distributed across various levels, which were disconnected from the surrounding landscape and did not fully leverage the available vistas.
The objective of this renovation project was to design an open-plan home that includes an outdoor entertaining area, seamlessly integrating all spaces with the stunning views. A key challenge was to connect the pool and outdoor entertaining area, situated on the western side of the property, with the ocean views located on the opposite side, particularly given that these two areas were at different levels.
To address this, we designed a long, open living space that extends from east to west, uniting all areas across varying levels while maintaining a cohesive roof structure. This design choice resulted in a spacious living room on the eastern side, featuring a high ceiling and tall windows that maximize the ocean views.
The configuration of the bedrooms on the existing level remained unchanged, although they were reconfigured to better meet the family's needs. Additionally, we introduced a new upper level to accommodate a master retreat, further capitalizing on the breathtaking views.
In terms of external materials and overall building shape, simplicity of construction was prioritized to keep costs manageable. A combination of white lineaboard and featured timber walls was selected to achieve a coastal aesthetic, which was echoed in the interior spaces, as envisioned by the interior designer and client. The carport and outdoor entertaining parapets were clad with bare cement boards to introduce a concrete texture. Furthermore, the feature wall dividing the pool and carport was rendered in a neutral color, allowing it to be adorned with climbing vines.
